behalf of Professor Mowat, protesting against the reduction
and Professor Ferguson was heard on his own
behalf by the Board. After full discussion of the matter,
the Board stated that no new light had been thrown
upon the matter since the question had been fully
dealt with in 1893, and they felt that they were compelled
to abide by their former decision. They pointed out
that the question under consideration, arose in consequence
of these professors accepting a commutation of
their annunities from the Temporalities Board. They
had elected to receive a commutation, with the result
that the University Funds were deprived of so much
revenue, and the Treasurer was in conequence obliged
to deduct from their salaries the amount thus withdrawn
from the revenue.

The increasing numbers and work
of the College demanded additional assistance on all
sides. It had now become a necessity to have more
help in the Library, and the Curators in their report
strongly recommended the appointment of an assistant
who could spend several hours daily in the
Library and thus relieve Professor Shortt of work
which had now become impossible for him with his
increased class work. The Senate therefore appointed
Miss Lois Saunders early in the year assistant
Librarian at a salary of $200 a year.
