My Dear Mrs. Anneke,
I do not intend
this little scrawl as an
answer to your long,
sweet letter. I hope the
books reached you safely.
We have received two
papers from you. Father
& I intended reading
your story, paragraph by
paragraph---all we are
able to do, with our limi-
ted knowledge of German.
But to our grief, the first
ltr. was destroyed in the
gardener's family! We had
lent it to him (he is a grand
nephew of Schiller) & had
failed to charge him to re-
turn it! Have you another
