Dear Madam Anneke:

You doubtless wonder why you have had no copy to your letter [esq.?] this first, I had a piece of writing begun that I was somewhat obliged to complete at once; when I expected Ms. Stanton to visit me on her way west and I wished to talk matters over with her, but the mad[c?] engagements that prevented her coming finally I have had an attack of congestion of the lungs, after which I have to day been out for the first time.

I believe I wrote you that I very much favored a protest, favored that more than a memorial to Congress-not then that I at all object to a memorial, only I do not think a memorial ought to be the only thing relied upon. This is to be the long session of Congress and if we wait & see what action Congress will take, before circulating a protest it would then be too late to get sufficient signatures to a protest.

After getting well enough to write I drew up a form of Memorial and one of protest and sent to Miss Anthony for her suggestion and criticism. By this morning mail they are returned and the takes me to get them to Milwaukie by the 7th (to [illegible] ) that Mrs. Stanton may look
