had taken thurs. Here we crossed
through rapids and were below
a little fall, but our six paddlers took
us through it very skillfully. It was a joy to trail
our fingers in the cool water and dampen our
brows which seemed at fever heat under the
broiling tropical sun. We paid a pound for
crossing the river, but we voted the money
well spent as we could not walk the long
distance back. It was a beautiful experience
too, winding in and out among the tiny wooded
Islands, while the roar of the River pouring
itself into the mighty chasm below was
fairly deafening. We had a trying hot, dusty
walk before we reached the hotel. We had
been gone four hours and with the exception
of the few minutes spent in the canoe, we
had been on our feet all the time the sun
had fairly broiled us and our throats
were parched with thirst. It was lunch time
and as soon as possible we found our way
to our table. All four voted themselves disap-
pointed. The heat only had come up to our
expectations. Everything is at its worst. The rains
begin next month when the grass, ferns and
flowers will appear, the dust will ease to be so
