he had won distinction at Queen's and Chicago, and had
done besides a good deal of post-graduate study, which
he is still keeping up, along with considerable literary
and scientific work. So there was no breach in the
continuity or system of the Economic Chair.

Equally fortunate was the Board in securing
W.W. Swanson, M.A., Ph.D., as Assistant Professor. He
too was a graduate of Queen's and Chicago of high
standing, and of much promise as a teacher, and,
like Dr. Shelton, devoted much of his vacation time
to post-graduate study.

The arrangement with Professor George W. Mitchell
of the Classical Department was made more definite,
so that the Board's and his sense of its meaning would
be at one.

With the rapid expansion of the University from year
to year, and the corresponding increase of administrative
duties, it had become evident that Principal
Gordon must be relieved of work in the classroom
as Professor of Divinity.

The University as a whole needed his undivided
attention. Accordingly, the Professors in the
Theological Department were requested to make
such division of the work, amongst them, as
would serve for the session, and until, at its next
regular meeting, April 28, 1909, the Board could
