use of it, should colored men be left out of it. The
colored people were given every assurance by us who supported the
Democratic ticket last fall, that you would accord them every
race benefit which they had enjoyed under previous Presidents.
I recall some assurance of this given by yourself, and I am so
confident of your honor, that each day I find it necessary to
appease some doubter.

Some of our members have suggested protesting against
the appointment of a Caucasian man to Hayti, a Negro Republic,
as Minister, a place which our League sought to fill, presenting
the name of George E. Taylor of Otumwa, Iowa, and others fully
capable.---Now, while we decline to oppose the appointment of
a gentleman, having no other grounds for doing so save his being
a white man, and thank God, many of them are our best friends,
yet we trust that some worthy colored "Democrats" shall be
recognized on the same basis which the Haytian appointment has
been made.
