only to the impulses of good; that your ears may be closed to
every slander but ever open to the truth; and that your con-
science may preside at all hearings which are to determine
what course you will pursue in dealing with men. It would not
be amiss to remember "Righteousness exalteth a nation."

Centuries in this country reward my race only with a bad
name, both without reason or just cause. But we are not dis-
mayed because we do not agree with our enemies.

May we confide in you to be the unselfish President of an
entire nation? May ten millions of your fellow citizens(?) in
black rely upon you as the nation's head to stand only for the
fair thing for all? If we can have this assurance, maybe our
clouds will grow lighter, our miseries fewer; our labors sweet
er; and our hopes brighter for the greatness and goodness of
this nation.

Wishing you every success that good entitles one to, I am,

Yours very truly,
G. W. P. Brown
