were unceremoniously removed, and their places filled by white men.

What is most alarming to us is the fact, that while these
indignities and wrongs are being heaped upon us, as a race, though
hundreds of us voted for our present representatives, from the
President down, no voice has been heard in our defense, emanating
from men, who are supposed to be in sympathy with what is right,
just and patriotic.

We need now, at Washington, men who are brave and
courageous enough to stand up, and speak out for human rights, for
all classes of men, as did Lincoln and Sumner, in all sections of
our land, and especially American citizens. Otherwise our govern-
ment becomes a glittering, meaningless farce.

We naturally expect our own representatives from New
Jersey to stand up, and be counted on the side of right and decen-
cy.

Thirdy, the present administration has been characterized
by the "Washington Bee", as teaching 10,000,000 citizens of color,
as the administration of "Negro segregation, elimination and damna-
tion"!!! That is, the Negro is not only to be fenced off, and
otherwice stigmatized and eliminated as a political factor, but he
is to be downed by the present administration, so far as his future
is concerned in the arena of Anerican politics.

If this is to prove to be the one damnable feature of the
Wilson Administration, it will rise up to plague the party now in
power for the next 50 or 100 years to come. The whole American
people will not stand for it, though at present the conscience of
the nation may seem to be asleep, in the presence of so collossal
an injustice.

The principle of human rights, and social justice, in
which alone can be found that unknown word "new freedom", is
dear to the hearts of all men, who are decent and have a real love
for liberty. Messers. Hoke Smith, Vardaman &c. have given it out
that they will not stand for the appointment of any negro to any
decent Federal office. Shall the wheel of American progress,
for the whole people, be turned back by these men who are governed by
their prejudices, rather than by reason, and a high sense of
patriotism?

We appeal to you, Sir, as our representative to guard
sacredly our interests and rights in our National Legislature.
