My dear Friend Tumulty:-

Joshua C. Gunnell of 19 Kearney Avenue
and Doctor George E. Cannon of 354 Pacific Avenue,
Jersey City, representing the Civic Organization com-
posed of the colored people of Hudson County, have
called on me about matters in which naturally they are
interested. They inform me that statements have been
circulated to the effect that the Democratic party is
hostile to the colored citizens. I have assured them
that this is not so, but, nevertheless, the fact that it
is reported about has a harmful effect on the prospects
not only of the colored politicians but on the doctors,
lawyers and colored men in other walks of life. They
want to obtain a conference with the President and solicit
his views on the matter. They tell me the conference need
only last a very short time, and I have said that I would
take the matter up with you. I will talk to you about
the matter when I get to Washington but meanwhile take
this means of calling it to your attention.
