Status: Needs Review

To The Colored Peoeple of The
Pee Dee Section.

Dear Beloved:-

This thought suggest itself to me, that we are facing a great em-
ergency as a race, and that all of us ought to be engaged in some
way in the work, looking toward the emprovement of the condition
of our youth.

About Fifty years ago our ancestors were emancipated from the
first Slavery, (the enslavement of their bodies) and began to make
history, and a name for themselves, among our while people who
attained to the highest civilization and culture to be found, with
crude and untrained minds, to find that we had only emancipated
bodies but enslaved minds, and to become truly such citizens as our
country demands, and to do our part of service for the good of the
country, the whole man must be free (free from ignorance,) our
relation to the white people who have built up the Industries in this
country and who are at the head of the Governmental and Com-
mercial affairs, make it our duty to demonstate to them and to the
world, that we have a Mission here. and that it is possible for us to
live here in peace without friction, and each be helpful to the other
in developing the great rescurces of this Sout land, and make it the
greatest country on earth. Almighty God has placed us here
together in training for mutual service, the white man, and the
Black man are the only two races that has lived together (with all
their mistakes) so long and done so well; and they will continue to
live together.

But the Colored man must be trained in the present day science.
We must Educate, and more than all we must provide for the Edu-
cation that would best fit our people to occupy acceptably and hon-
orably the place that we can fill best and do our part creditably.

This is one of the richest and best Sections in the State, and yet
we have not a single Institution in the Section that are opened to
our youth where they may enter to secure higher training especially
in the Science of Agriculture and Industry that they, may be trained
in those arts that would make life more serviceable.

Many of them leave School in a much worse fix than when they
enter. Now, my people, I have seen a vission which I will tell you.

It is a great Institution at Didon, S. C., to meet this long felt
want. It shall teach the Heart, Head and the Hand.
