are making friends, through the churches (colored), of the colored
people; Japanese men who have been statesmen and generals in their
own country, and that they are slyly learning all they can about our
country in various ways, all the time making us believe that they
are our friends, but when the favorable opportunity comes they are
certainly going to make the attack which they are now planning, etc.
He says he knows this to be a fact and that the American people
are lulling thenselves into a peaceful feeling that all is well,
but that underneath it all is this quiet working of the Japanese
with the colored people and that it surely would come to an issue
some time in the near future.

I said to him, "Why ___________, you are a loyal citizen of the
United States, arent you?" and he gave me a very doubtful reply.
Then I said, in case anything happened by which a foreign country
should acquire possession of our country, "how would you feel
about that ?" Well, he said he certainly would much prefer being
under the American flag. He also said that if the white people
of our country would treat the colored race with kindness and con-
sideration, there is nothing they would not do for the white
people; why, they would "worship them."

As you are probably aware, in Chicago this race has a great
hold. They are getting into our best neighborhoods, especially on
the South Side, and only recently one negro purchaser tried to buy
on one of our best avenues and there was such a protest that the
sale did not go through.

This colored man is above the average in intelligence; his
father was a southern preacher and although he has no book education,
he has a broad knowledge of both foreign and domestic affairs; so
please accept this bit of information for what it is worth which is
given with no expectation of reply, simply from a woman who loves her
country and who stands staunch and true to the President of the
United States.

Very respectfully,
(Mrs.) Frances Ida Apt.
