Hon. J.P. Tumulty,
Secretary to the President
Washington, D.C.

My dear Sir:- I am directed by Bishop Alexander Walters
President of the National Colored Democratic League to
thank you for the very potent part you played in bringing
about the appointment of James L. Curtis Esq. as Minister to
Africa. He wishes also to say that your assurances that the
President jas fully made up his mind to do a nice thing by
the men in the Democratic ranks who have been loyal thro. all
the derision, and contempt that has been heaped upon them
are a source of great comfort to him, and to us all. He is
praying that other appointments will immediately follow, and
that the other faithful men who are still refusing to become
discouraged may be appointed to places.

We believe that you will keep the matter before the Pres
ident as far as you think it wise to so do, and that we shall
soon be made to rejoice again.

The Bishop wishes me to beg, in my own behalf that you help
to get me some thing to do. I was appointed a Deputy Collect-
or in Hon. Chas. W. Anderson's office and served there as suh
till July 15th, and was requested to resign ., since then I
have found nothing to do and have an invalid wife and aged
mother dependent upon me. I have exhausted my savings now
and am in dire need of something to do in order to live.
You will remember me as the Bishop's confidential friend and
political Secretary. I called upon you for him several times.

I have the honor to subscribe myself,

Faithfully yours,
Peter J. Smith
