My pamphlet was spoken of very highly by many
of my friends, who were competant to judge
I intended to have preserved a copy of it for
several years. I had more than one, but by
some means, they have been lost. Many amusing
incidents occurred during the canvass &
at the election, one of which is too good to be
lost. I had been assured by the officers of my
Regiment on the Campaign to Canada the
year before, that I would not lose the vote
of but one man, who belonged to the Regt.
Three or four of the companies were in the
District. On the 1st day of the election a Private
in Capt. Tate's company from Pulaski
County, who was very much devoted to me, &
who lived in the mountains, came to the County
town to vote. I was there - and the man whose
name I am sorry I don't remember, was fond
of a joke, and equally fond of good eating
and drinking, rode up to the best tavern
in the town, kept by Maj. Fox, the Clerk of the
county whom he knew to be violently opposed
to my election, & who had been electioneering
with him, previously to get him to vote agt
me, & he had promised, that "may be" he would.
The Maj. had invited him, as he lived a considerable
distance from the courthouse, to
come to his house on the day of the election
have his horse put up & eat his dinner with
him - this invitation was accepted. I was in
the public room of the Tavern, when he came
in, but he barely spoke to me, giving me however
a very significant wink of the eye
