with my residence in Wayne County & determined
to change it, with this view, I visited Huntsville,
it was then a new place, & new county and
much [?] prevailed in both town and
county; so much so as to discourage me.
From Huntsville, I visited counties
in middle Ten. and being pleased with the
prospects in Shelbyville, rented a house and
made the arrangements to remove there.
But when it came to the test, I could not
get my consent to leave "Old Kaintuck"
and in the fall I removed to Winchester in
Clarke County, the very worst selection I could
have made in the state or elsewhere.
The first great error I committed was in
voting for the "Compensation Bill"; the se-
cond [second] was in removing [underlined: from] Wayne County;
the third was in selecting Winchester as
my place of residence. I was in a great ma-
sure [measure] influenced in prefering that place by the
fact that I had been partly raised there.
My brothers Benjamin & Levi resided in the
county & my brother Jonathan resided in
Montgomery County, but a very short distance
from the others; brother Saml. resided in Fay-
ette [Fayette] about 20 miles distant. My brothers were
all excellent men and I was devotedly attached
to them. My brother Benjamin was very much
a man of business, of great popularity and
influences, and was to come into the Office of
Sheriff in the succeeding May. I very soon
got into a lucrative practice. My first speech-
