he had never seen, a legislative body, except the Territorial
Legislature in session. There were many men
of business, and talent in the state, but tho most
of them, had been in the convention, & had rendered
themselves unpopular by some obnoxious provision
in the Constitution, & were beaten for the Legislature.
An old Gentleman of the name of Caldwell, was
elected Speaker of the House but was almost entirely
illiterate, & was compelled in a short time to
resign. A Mr. McArthur was elected Clerk of the
House; he was also incompetant & also resigned during
the session. Several of my old acquaintances
& friends were members of both houses, particulary
[Bennable?] Clark, a brother of Gen. Clark of Kentucky
& brother in law of my old master, David
Bullock, Col. Jesse Boone, son of the old Col. Daniel
Boone, James Alcorn & Thos. Snoly from Wayne County
Kenty & John Ray from Warren. Col. Jesse Boone
& John Ray died during the session.

Colonel Daniel Boone died this winter, during the
session of the Legislature. The Legislature honored
his memory by adjourning, going into mourning, &c.
During the session, David Barton & Thos. H Benton
were elected senators to Congress. Mr. Barton had
been President of the Convention, & was personally
very popular. Col. Benton was not popular, but
was considered a man of talents & being allied to
Mr. Clay by marriage ( he is a cousin of Mr. Clay's)
secured him with the aid of a few men, myself
amongst the rest, the vote of the Kentuckians
who were members.

I remained two or three weeks, at St. Louis, & then went
up the Missouri to Franklin in Howard County then
a considerable village & the county site of that wealthy and
