without any attempt being made to molest or
arrest him; then shortly afterwards, several
very spanky young Gentlmen, began to fly
about, and curse and & Swear, & call for Horses
and very soon, were risking in every direction
but the right one in pursuit of him. The great
town of Winchester was almost under Martial
law for several days. My movements were
strictly watched, but notwithstanding all the
vigilance, we got him off safely in a few
days, on the trip to Cuba. He was himself
very desirous to surrender & stand his trial
believing himself justifiable. But I opposed
it, on account of the then state of his health
and the advanced season of the year. The
incitement against him was very great - no
more than one or two persons witnessed the
transaction. No one heard the coronation
which took place at Mr. Campbell's door,
and I was apprehensive, that it would be
very different to get at the truth of the whole
matter. He travelled, thro Alabama, Georg
ia to Tallahassee in Florida, where he found
good friends, two of whom (Mr. Duval, son
of Gen. Duval & Ms. William accompanied
him, to Havanna - where he arrived about
the day of...1828. He remained in
Havanna, for 6 weeks, & then changed his resi
dence to the neighborhood of Matanzas,
from which palce, we received Letters from
him pretty regularly. As he intended to re
turn to Florida in the spring, I wrote him
that his sister and myself, would track
him in Tallahassee. We left Winchester
about the 20th of April 1829 and arrived at Tallahassee
