on Sunday night before the 1st Monday in May,
where we had the pleasure of meeting my afflicted
& unfortunate son, in greatly improved health. He
had reached Tallahassee, a few days before us,
from Charleston, S. C. having been compelled to take on
shipping for that port from Matanzas. He stated
that the vessel in which he sailed from Matanzas
after arriving in sight of Charleston, had been
kept from landing several days by contrary
winds, which with his travel by land from
Charleston, had reduced his flesh & impaired his
general health - that before he left the island
he weighed 140 pounds. Indeed from his appearance
when I first met with him in Florida,
I had strong hopes, that he might recover
his health entirely - if he could be induced not
to return to Tennessee, but the way impossible.
He had been indicted in the Franklin County Court for
an assault, on Dwyer with intent to kill, &
he was inflexible in his determination to
return & stand his trial. He had some unsettled
business in Florida, which prevented his returning
with his Sisters & myself. But he followed
me soon after, and arrived in Winchester
on the [space] day of [space] 1829.
I spent two weeks in Florida, very pleasantly
Gov. W. P. Duvall, an old Kentucky acquaintance
& friend, called upon us the next morning
after our arrival, as did several others, acquaintances
& friends. His daughter called on
mine, & would have her home with her
We dined with the Govr. on Thursday with a large
party of Gentlemen & afterwards at the Homes
of others, to whom I shall always feel under
lasting obligations for their kindness & hospitality
