he was not afraid to die. He had been a believer
in the Christian Religion for years, but had not
attached himself to any church-but after receiving
his death wound, he was baptized by the
Rev. W. Watter of the Presbyterian church
& who also administered to him, the Sacrament
for the Lord's supper.
I find it to be my duty to record all the particulars
of this tragical affair, which on its
inception, execution, & the subsequent legal
proceedings was altogether the most wicked
diabolical & scandalous that ever disgraced
a civilised community.

It has been some time since the preceding pages
were written. Before resuming I desired to see that
I had before me several days of probable good
health, of uninterrupted leisure, but in this
I have been disappointed. Occasional visits to
Talladega & attention to my little farming operations
engrosses almost the whole of my time
& my health is hardly ever good. I am now afflicted
with tootache & Rheumatism &
it is very doubtful, whether I shall be able
to write for any length of time, although I
am particularly desirous, to leave behind me
