for Winchester, in company with Turney &
Calloway, he declined publishing it. He stated
in his Letter (on file) that they had
left; but before leaving A. called at his
office, to know, when my "Advertisement"
would be out. He told him, that evening
or the next morning, and the Trio (A.
T. & C) took their departure for Winchester,
supposing no doubt, that they had me
safe for $1000. I told Col. C. that in offering
first a reward of $500, and afterwards
of $1000, I intended them exclusively
for persons at a distance, and
not for the citizens of Franklin County
who were induced by Considerations of personal
friendship, or of the public good to go in
pursuit of A.; tho' I said to him, if he
claimed it, I would pay him the reward
of $500
; with which he said, he would be
satisfied. He afterwards swore, on the final
trial of A. that he came back voluntarily,
that he did not arrest him in [?]
but that he merely to Huntsville in Company
with Turney, as a friend to accompany
Mr. A. to Winchester. (But this was
after he had pocketed my $500. Being
asked, if he had not represented to me,
that he had taken A. at Huntsville, and
recd $500 for doing so, he did not choose to
answer the question.
Immediately upon A's being committed
to prison, I applied to the Sheriff, to bring
him before a justice of the peace, with
a view to his being committed for trial in
the Circuit Court. In this I was unsuccessful
