friendly - Howard had said in my presence
that Jim Sharp, had ruined himself by
bailing A. the first time. Hilton associated
with us & our friends, of the bench & pretended
to be very indignant, at what he believed
would be the result.

The presiding Judge of the Circuit, was Nathaniel
W. Williams, who had been many years
on the bench & was proverbial for his honesty &
integrity as a man & his impartiality on the
bench. He was a Cousin of the late Colo. John Williams
of Knoxville, Ten., & of Lewis Williams of N. Carolina,
Tho. L. Williams (Chancellor) & others.
He and my son & myself, had on our first
acquaintance in 1826, Contracted an intimacy
& friendship, of which I was proud - such was
my regard & respectfor the man. He had
been for many years on terms of intimacy
& friendship with Col. William P. Anderson (the
father of R. K. A.) & also with Mr. Campbell
his brother in law. But he was not the
Judge that they were willing should preside
on the trial of a Murderer.

Mr. Campbell had been elected this year (1829) to the Senate
from the Counties of Franklin & Warren, & Mr.
Turney had been elected, the Representative
from Franklin - Judge Isacks, was closely
affiliated with them; he was the personal friend
of Colo. Anderson, & the personal & political enemy
of Judge Williams & myself, & was at
the time & for many years had been, a man
of almost unlimited influence in Franklin
County. He had signalised his hostility to Judge
Williams by making him a party defendant
