and acquitted themselves with signal ability
Balch, Peyton & Yerger, were all good speakers
B. &P. occasionally eloquent. Mr. Yerger discussed
the legal questions involved, much to his
credit, & the gratification of his friend.
Genl. Gibbs, took the lead in the defense
a position that was assigned to him by his
friend on trial, & to which his associates
yielded with respectful deference. Tho'
not by any means, an orator or even
a fluent speaker, he is an able advocate
particularly in such a care - He is as bold &
fearless as a Lion. A gentleman of excellent
sense & great moral worth, which gives to
every word he says, a degree of weight & importance,

He is an old Wayne County, Kentucky friend
of mine. His commencement was rather
impromising - but by industry, perseverance &
an honorable course of conduct, he has been
for 30 years or more, a very distinguished
Member of the bar, & has filled
several high offices in Tennessee. He has been
the Pres. of two different banks, A member
of the State Legislature of one of the Chancellors
of the State.
Hop Turney & Co. were all thrown "aback"
by the decision of the high Court of Impeachment.
Fertile however in resources as corrupt
in means, a Bill was introduced to
create a new Judicial Circuit by which
Franklin County, would be detached from
Judge W.'s Circuit. It passed, as I presume
without difficulty just at the heel of the session
