and he was elected, Whereas, if Justice had
been done, of the Will of the people had been
consulted, a majority of the 16 new justices
would have been in favor of Gray, who of
course would have been reelected. In some
instances, elections had had been held in the Conpanies,
& reported to the members who paid
to no respect to them. In one instance to
my knowledge, a venerable old Gentleman
(Samuel Kitchens) was unanimously elected
but he was not of the "right stripe" and
Isaac Estill, the father of Dr. Estill, was
appointed. In another instance, Thomas
Wright, a highly respectable & Sensible
man was recommended to fill vacancy
in the Stone fort Company, but he could
not be appointed, as the Members sent word
to the Company without an election. My excellent
friend John Hickerson Esqr - believing that
they were acting dishonestly, had the people
of the company convened, & an election held
every man, voting for Mr. Wright. He himself
handed to Mr. Campbell at Nashville, a
Certificate of the election. Mr. Campbell
I believe, had a Resolution and opted in the
Senate, appointing Mr Wright, but Turney
would not allow it, to pass the house _ and
as he could not find any person in the
bounds of that company to vote for Finch
he had an additional one appointed in some
other company. Mr. Campbell told Mr. Heckerson
that Wright was appointed, & he came
to Court with Mr. W. for the purpose of having
him qualified; but behold! There was no
commission. I have no doubt but what Mr.
Campbell, believed what he said was true
