married was a daughter of Govr Adair of
Kenty. - an educated, talented woman, and
a Member of the Methodist Church.
Mr. Campbell his brother in law, was a man
& a lawyer of high standing & influence.
The Prisoner was to be defended by an array
of Counsel, that would have attracted great
attention any where (F. Grundy, W. E. Anderson
Thos. H. Fletcher)
The deceased was of no ordinary character
He had left behind him, devoted friends
who were anxious that justice should be
done
.
The names of the Jurors, were drawn as usual
from a Hat - The first name drawn
was William Knight, an old & until then
a respectable man, - Being sworn & examined,
he stated that he had not formed
& expressed an opinion. Altho' I had put upon my
guard in relation to him, I did not challenge
him _ not believing it, possible, that he
could have sworn falsely, but in this, I was
mistaken. He had not only formed an
opinion, but had repeatedly expressed it
as could have been proven by many of his
neighbors.
The honest men of the County, who were
summoned, very frankly stated that they had
formed & expressed their opinion, most of
them from having head of the evidence
or conversed with the witnesses, & were therefore
set aside. The base & corrupt portion
at least many of them, particularly those
who were "packed" for the purpose, denied
that they had formed or expressed any opinion.
