Head of the Russian Railway Mission in the
United States - At the Madison Square Gare

Held Under the Auspices of the Russian Soviet Recognition League
(Professor Lomonossoff is a Nenshevik Intellectual,

CITIZENS:
It will hardly be a mistake to say that the majority of those
present here tonight are with the Bolsheviki. I, myself, am not
a Bolshevik. Moreover I am strongly opposed to the tactics of the
Bolsheviki. Nevertheless, I have come here that we may together
strongly protest against an armed intervention in Russia, and that
we may openly express ourselves in favor of recognition of the So-
vict Government.

Much of what I wish to say will probably not be to your lik-
ing, but you must understand that the very fact that people of
different convictions and differents points of view come to the
very same conclusion, only emphasizes the justness of it.

Economically Russia has been crushed by the war, and has been
Spirtually poisoned by serfdom, absolutism and the intrigues of
all subsequent Governments. She is already on the brink of a
precipice. She has already tumbled over and without aid there is
no way out of her predicament, Now way out, because of impoverish-
ment, because of the impossibility of obtaining or producing with-
in the country much of what is sbsolutely necessary, as for in-
stance, locomotives and agricultural machinerary; no way out, because
