Camden Man Brutally Murdered in
Florida Home and Woman
Dragged From House

1000 SEARCH FOR FIENDS

Edward F. Sherman, a former photog-
rapher of 934 Broadway, Camden, who
also had studios in Wildwood and Holly
Beach, was brutally murdered in his
winter home in St. Petersburg, Fla, last
night, and his wife was assaulted and
robbed. She is at the point of death in
the Augusta Memorial Hospital, and a
posse of 1,000 men are searching the
woods for two negroes who committed
the crime.

Sherman was asleep in bed in his home
and his wife was sitting in an adjoining
room. Suddenly the two negroes walked
up to the window and shoved a shotgun
against Mr. Sherman's head and fired.
The top of his head was blown off. The
two men then climbed through the win-
dow and knocked Mrs. Sherman sense-
1ess.

The negroes dragged her to an out-
house about 100 feet from the residence,
where she was attacked by both men, her
skull fractured and her body cut and
bruised. She was left for dead. Before
leaving the murderers took $102 from a
pocket of her skirt.

Mrs. Sherman regained consciousness
in about an hour and dragged herself
to the farm of a neighbor about a mile
away. A posse was immediately formed
and a thousand men armed with shot
guns are searching the woods and brush.
Feeling is running high, and it was said
that a lynching would follow the cap-
ture of the murderers.

First Mrs. Sherman returned to her
home, pulled herself to the foot of the
bed and saw that her husband was dead.
She fainted, but revived struggled into
a raincoat and made her way to the
home of the nearest farmer.

Sherman and his wife were well known
in this city and in Camden. For fif-
teen years he conducted a studio at the
Broadway address, but sold out two
years ago to I. M. Jaffe. Mr. Sherman
still retained his studios at the seashore
resorts. He spent the winters in Flori-
