Dear Mr. Tumulty:

I have your kind acknowledgement of November 18th
in which you state that you are trying to "settle it (the
segregation issue) in a satisfactory way." There is but
one satisfactory way and that is to do simple justice to the col-
ored people and not to discriminate against them. It is an
easy way, which requires nothing more than living up to the
spirit of one's oath of office.

Sincerely yours,

Oswald Garrison Villard

Mr. Joseph P. Tumulty
Secretary to the President
Washington, D.C.
