St Louis June 17 1865

My dear Gray

Our "friend" Schultz
sends me the within for you. He
may be a good Cassiniaceologist
ensconsed in his Cassiniaceological-
Museum, but he is an abominably
vain fellow, who measures
others by his own variety.

Nothing new here — our people
as I expected long since as the one
of the bad consequences of this
war, are completely cowed, and
bow before military power and
before whoever should like to
usurp it — fye upon such
"republicans"! No this people
is not republican — only in name

I have at last fully examined
Parry's Nuphar and find that
Hayden collected the same at the
headwaters of Snake River.
I name it {Nuphar} polysepala. It
has not 3x3 sepals, but
they are in 8/13 or a similar arrangement
