JoNewell: Succession Books (regimental) Page 16; Soldier no. 7 gives his parish as what looks like Barney Castle. This is a local slang for Barnard Castle, if thats correct. Also what does NS or US mean in Period of Service. Wondered if it was National Service?

National Archives of the United Kingdom

That sounds about right for place of birth, not sure with the US or NS I will have to ask a colleague

chrisb

Does US mean unspecified?

JNewell

Good thought, that sounds likely.

National Archives of the United Kingdom

Spoke to my military specialist colleague and he confirms: US is unlimited service, and NS probably means the same, just their writing. You may also see LS, this is Limited Service. Thank you

chrisb

I have done more detective work on this using the UK Register of Service 1812-1831 on Ancestry.
Soldiers no. 5,9,10,12,13,14,15 and 18 in brackets{} I have checked out all the details and they correspond with the names I have given.

JNewell

Joanne Newell; Thats great. Wish I still had my Ancestry membership.

chrisb

Yes, it is very useful. I love the challenge of trying to find these obscure ones.

Great detective work, thank you
