Soldier 1: By whom enlisted - Captain Conran?

kevin04

No, I should apologise for butting in! I saw that page had been started, but the first entry caught my eye as I thought 'Conran' seemed a more likely name than 'Couran' for the enlister. You're probably right about Soldier 7 - I would have mis-read that as somewhere in Herts, ie Hertfordshire, and assumed that the original record-keeper had mixed up the County and Parish columns! I can't find anywhere approximating to 'Sakane' in Hertfordshire, however. If you're right, there's an intriguing back-story to be uncovered about how an 18-year-old with a German name and with previous experience in the East Middlesex Volunteers - I wonder if he was from a refugee family that fled to Britain during the revolutionary wars? Page 118 appears to say that he was transferred to the forces in Amerca in 1814. I'll butt back out now and let you finish unhindered!

JNewell

JoNewell; Thanks for your comment Kevin. But I kind of changed my mind today. There is a parish in Hertfordshire called 'Sacombe' and if you pronounce as spelled here, 'Sakum' thought that made more sense but not sure if the Herts are of Germany is correct? Your story is far more interesting :)

JNewell

JoNewell; Soldier 14 comes from 'Brizule' could be 'Burrishoole'.
Soldier 15 is from 'Turlo' think this could br Turlough.

Soldier 7: Hertfordshire would fit better with prior service in the East Middlesex Volunteers (though it's a much more mundane story than my flight of fancy!). If true, it's still intriguing to know why he joined them and not the well-established Hertfordshire Militia...
