[Oct 27, in left margin] A knotted hankerchief round their heads
which they remove when salaaming you.
We have seen more of Mr. & Mrs. Chill of Tollinghurst Place
No.95 London. England & Mr & Mrs Rose of Edinburgh
Scotland. Also Mr. Mort our fellow passengers on
the Empress of India. Mr. or rather Captain Brown
dined with us & we finally settled with
Miss holmes to come to Tokio with us on
Monday or Tuesday letting her know which day
on Friday night. We pay all expenses and pay
her a Japanese dollar a day. Our purchases
were a [sword?] of ivory, [two?] little ivory carvings
but on our return, we get a box of camphor
wood. to put our things in & send [the?] back by
Ronald to Vancouver. We talked to Mr. & Mrs. [Carleton?]
who crossed the Pacific with us. She is a bride
and homesick. Mrs. Gerods of the [Legation?] & her
mother Mrs. Atchinson asked us to go & call upon
them. Mr. & Mrs. Brindley also were so kind
& invited us to come and see them. I like them
Both. And I dare say we will stay friends always.
She is a bride also & was not a good sailor.
Their luggage was all left at Toronto except
hand luggage.

[28 in left margin] - We left at 8 15 for Nikko the summer resort
of the rich Japanese. We had Dr. & Mrs. Chill
