[Oct 28, in left margin] and met Mr. Hartshorne & his niece who is very charming.
She has lived in Japan for 3 years & speaks the language
well. She is a clever woman from Philadelphia
Pennsylvania & has learned Japanese extremely well
Also the manners of the people & their customs
We had many waits on the road at each stopping
Place from 20 to 40 minutes the result was
that we only arrived here at 6 30
it was a very long journey & our lunch
was a strange compound of 2 whole
chickens, cold beef, spiced Beef, 8 boiled Eggs
cheese, bread and butter, pepper & salt,
apples, persimmons, had it not been for
my little knife, and the fruit knife we found
in my bag also our [curaecar?], we would
have fared badly. Miss Hartshorne proved
a very delightful companion, and
speaking the language, as she does enabled
us, to see much more than the average
tourist. We started just at the station
to enjoy ourselves. Coming out of a bright
lighted station with electric light
into darkness and, a medley of Chinese
lanterns, jinrickisha men &
railway coolies. It seemed like a scene in an
