lighted at night and the effect must
have been very grand among
the dark evergreens and the ilex trees
that here reach a wonderful size.
Wild wisteria grows like the wild
grape back at home to a very
great size and age. In May when in
blossom this must indeed be
a beautiful spot. The bright maple
that gives a colour wall is just
now looking its best. After we got
tired of walking we took rickshaws
to drive all about the other
temples. Milly took some photos
which I hope will turn out good.
We got home at 6 p.m. having
spent a most charming day
and we felt so glad we had
seen Nara on so fair a day
for this was the clearest day we had
in Japan.

22 A heavy rain. Too bad for it will
prevent our doing what we had
intended to accomplish.
