I acknowledge the receipt of your note
of invitation to attend the grand ceremony
of laying the corner stone of the principal
building of the University of the South, but
sincerely regret that it will not be in my
power to be with you on that{above insert symbol} interesting occasion.
You have my warmest wishes for your
success & earnest prayers that the
noble institution will receive the
liberal support of every Southern and
South Western State & may be a lasting
bond of Union & Christian fraternity
