James H Otey L.L.D.

Dear Sir,

Your letter of the 1st
inviting me, on behalf of "the Executive
Committee of the Board of Trustees
of the University of the South" to be
"at the laying of the Corner Corner Stone
of their principal bulding on the
10th instant" was received this morning.

It would afford me very great
pleasure to attend this interesting cer-
-emony and to form the acquaintances of
many, and renew the friendships with
others, of the distinguished men, who
will be officially there, and attracted
there, by this first step in the erection
of the buildings for the most magnificent
seat of learning and intelectual life
which has ever {illegible} in this
country.

I truly thank you {illegible: &c? for? o'r?}
