Litchfield, Connecticut,
Sept. 29th 1860 --
Dear Sir,
Your invitation, to the
laying the corner stone of your
University, is just received, forwarded
to me from Augusta.
It would give me great pleasure
to witness that ceremony: But, aside
from all other reasons, one, insuperable
obstacle prevents me. I have been
detained here, some time, by the serious
illness of Mrs. Gould, who can neither
travel, nor be left, with prudence.
There is every prospect of my being
obliged to remain with her, for weeks
to come -- so that my acting on your
kind invitation is out of the question
Very Respectfully
Your Ob. Serv't.
{illegible: M?} T. Gould
Rt. Rev. J. H. Otey.
