University of Virginia

October 4. 1860

Dear Sir

Your letter of the 27th ult, addressed
to the Faculty of the University of Virginia,
has been received, and duly considered --

The Faculty have instructed me to communicate
to you, their grateful sense of the distinguished
consideration you have shown them, and to express
their very sincere regret, that the circumstances
in which they are placed at present, will not
allow them to respond to your invitation, in
the manner most congenial to their feelings --

Our session commenced on the 1st inst, and
we are busily engaged in organizing our classes,
and putting them to work. At the same time,
two of our colleagues, who visited Europe during
the vacation, have not yet returned, and probably
will not be at their posts, earlier than the 10th inst.
A third could not be spared from the urgent
duties, incumbent on us at this period of the session,
without serious detriment, not only to the interests
