motion was felt in the vessel as if
a heavy squall had struck her or
that she was grating on rocks
it was immediately repeated. On going
on deck the second officer immediately
exclaimed it is an earthquake. on
looking towards the shore the
sand on the beach seemed
rise as a wave & the earth
appeared to be in an undulating
motion. The shock lasted about
2 minutes as felt by us on board.
on going on shore after the
shock had subsided to examine
the ground & houses we found
[illegible] it were found
that a space full 4 miles in
circumference the roads were
rent both transversely &
longitudinally. in several
places especially in the Bandai
[boiling struck through] hot water eas welled
up, even through Macadamised
roads. Bridges were rent &
