Text of Petition: 23-1-1803-1
To the speakers and members of both houses of the General
Assembly-

The Petition of sundry of the inhabitants
of Davidson County

Your petitioners, beg leave to
State, altho there is a law, which rests it in the power
of the several county courts, to grant roads, & ferrys,
in such cases, that are deemed of public utility - Yet
the intention, of said law, is often defeated by certain
combinations, which admit of an appeal to the
superior Court - They beg leave to cite as an instance
thereof- That Mathew Brooks obtained an order of Court
which was sanctioned, by a majority of said court consis
=ting of twenty nine majistraes - But the ????
who had opposed it, had cajoled the court in to an
appeal to the superior court, whereby it was submitted,
to two of the Judges, whether the will of the County
should be gratified, who were well acquainted with
the circumstances - The result was that the said
Brooks, and an immense majority of your
petitioners, are defeated in the purpose of having
said ferry established - Wherefore they pray an Act
of your honourable assembly to enable & authorize
the said Brooks to open and establish a ferry
at ^or near the upper end of Waynesborough, on Cumberland river -
