March 1952

Thursday 13

Arose to see the sun come up on the scene. Said goodbye to Frieda the cow and Alfred the dog. Had breakfast, left dear little Winnie & after lovely drive over the hills with Hertzog P.R. put me on the Riverina Express from which I surveyed the drought smitten country, straw-colored, till after Tallong. No green anywhere. Was kindly met by Dinhams & deposited home before 9. Had a meal on what they gave me plus what was left from Winnie's lunch & then Glen got on the phone for nearly an hour & I did not get to bed till 11 when I was so exhausted. However, I saw the Andresens, wound the clocks & slept. Seats on train very uncomfortable & slippery & the train shook, no attendance but a good buffet counter where I actually got a cup of tea weak enough.
