If you look carefully at the "i" following the V you will see a small upstroke at the beginning of the "i".
My generation in Victoria (Australia) was taught to write with nibs that did that style of writing. Also an "r" following a capital letter would usually start with a very short downstroke on the line. Just as important as the shape of a letter is knowing the path the nib travelled to inscribe the letter.
