[Perhaps even more ? ?, one could see
the prudent teachings of Brady's father
pay off in the way Mary Brady ^she^ handled
the foundation's books, the choice of personnel
in the office and for the Foundation, the
choices she made of nearly-close friends
and her conservative form of dress.
She supervised somewhat single-handedly
every aspect of the Foundation's business.
She inspected the books regularly and sternly questioned
the auditors about accounting principles,
all with the intent of seeing to it that everything
was ^in her own words^ "above board" in the day-to-day
operation of the Foundation. No subject was too
obscure get involved with and none seemed to
escape Brady's constant review. One example - a
rather lengthy letter to a trusted friend shows how she gathered information
and passed it on to others - began with the
following quote, " I know I am giving you gossip,
but I have just been told". The letter mentions
the name of a program director in government;
and notes candidly the following: "My informant
does not think he ( the director) knows a great deal,
but thinks he is very influential there. I thought
I would mention this to you so that you can get
your ear to the ground". Getting one's ear to the
ground meant that one should pursue the information
diplomatically and report those impressions back as soon
as possible.
