Prophet. William H. Johnson received the gold medal, Albert A. Smith
and Sargent Johnson received the bronze award and Nancy Prophet
received the Otto H. Kahn Award. 25
In 1930, the Harmon Foundation conferred first prize to James
Lesesne Wells and the Otto H. Kahn Award went to Lillian A. Dorsey.
Three special awards were also offered that year: (1) The Alain
Locke Portrait Prize of $100.00 was given to Edwin Augustus Harleston
for "The Old Servant"; (2) The Arthur B. Spingarn Prize of $50.00 was
given to Robert Savon Pious for "Portrait of Roaland Hayes" and,
(3) The Commission Prize of $50.00 was given to James Latimer Allen,
a photographer. Honorable mentions were conferred upon Lois Mailou
Jones for "Negro Youth", Edward J. Brandford for "Broken Toys", and
William Arthur Cooper for "Vanishing Washer Woman". 26 *
Up until the collapse of the stock market and subsequent
Depression, the Harmon Foundation continued to sponsor traveling
exhibitions or works by Black artists. In 1931, a traveling
exhibit with an illustrated catalogue of 148 artists and an essay by
Alain Locke visited 50 cities in 27 states and the District of
Columbia. The exhibition was seen by over 350,000 people, 40% of
whom were Black. Brady advised that no exhibition should be arranged
in 1932 in which awards would be given; instead,
she arranged for special travelling exhibits of works by Black artists
that toured predominantly Black colleges and art centers across the nation.
Until now, Alain Locke had been a major advisor to Brady.
He was a major contributor to the catalogues accompanying
the Harmon Foundation's exhibitions until he [strike: and noted philosopher] wrote an
