The difficulty of establishing a racial ethos in art where signs and symbols are interchanged without ownership in any particular ethnic group is not limited to Black artists alone. It would be strange indeed to assume that the black artist has never been concerned with the specifics of a racially oriented art that is based in the life-style of his people. Pan Contra, he has always been aware of his specific role as a Black artist. Perhaps the best example to prove his awareness would be a thorough examination of the work and photography of the painters of the Harlem Renaissance.
