Charles White stands tall above the crowd of fine black draftsmen who are to be found in large numbers all over the United States. He has looked at the black man as a beautiful creature and has represented him with sense of dignity. When asked by the Art Seidenbaum of the Los Angeles Times why his work takes on the structure that it does, White responded by saying:

"I use Negro subject matter because Negroes are closest to me. I am trying to express the universal feeling through them, a meaning for all men. All of my life I have been painting a single painting. This does not mean that I am a man without anger. I have had my work in museams where I wasn't allowed to see it, but what I poured into my work is the challange of how beautiful life can be."
