January 8th A beautiful morning: at 8 weighed and made sail
setting stinsails on both sides. At noon made out the shipping in
the Harbor, and on coming into port we found our Flag Ship,
the Madagascar, and Sharpshooter, the French Admiral, who
played the Queen's anthem as we passed, the American Commodore
and a Dutch Brigantine - Commander went on board the
Flag Ship, returning soon with the mail, but to my astonishment
no letter from L- The different ships sent an Officer
on board with the usual etiquette - Admiral sent a message
to the Officers, not to enter into any arugment with any of
the American Officers, relative to the pending question - In
the evening went on board Madagascar and spent a very pleasant
hour or two with Bynoc-

January 9th Struck lower yards and topmasts preparatory
to refitting - At noon went on board the Flag Ship and had a
pipe with Captn Hope and the Flag Lieut. In the evening Clayhills
came on board and had supper with us-

January 10th Much surprised at finding a letter from L and
M on my table where I was turned out. - at 9 Surveying Officers,
came on board to inspect Boatswains, Carpenters & Engineers
Stores. In the evening it came on to rain very fast.

January 11th A thorough wet morning and everything very
dull.

January 12th Employed refitting ship and getting provisions
on board - Went alongside Sharpshooter to return
Clifts call but found no one on board, returned made
Saturday night and turned in.

Sunday January 13th 1856. At 10 went to Divisions
and performed Divine Service. Disrated Corporal of
