Two cases of Cholera in the Ship and some fatal
cases in the Ocean Monarch. In Ilha Grande Bay
we anchored, and were joined sometime after by
the Indefatigable; went to bed at 7.30

April 11th Christian went to Indefatigable to breakfast
returning about 9 and bringing me three notes from
different Officers: we immediately weighed and Steamed
out of the Bay, and then went to General Quarters: at
10.30 the fires were burnt out, and we made sail.
Paymaster paid savings - Signed for our mess
and the Sick mess fund (b/c) In the evening the winds
freshened and we reefed topsails: my cholera cases
getting better.

April 12th Tacked as requisite, the wind still
blowing from Eastward. At 10 saw the land .
Noon passed a small schooner - In the evening
had a game of Crib, made it Saturday night turned in.

Sunday April 13th At Sea - In the morning calm
and very hot. 9.30 Inspected Ship, mustered by Open
List, read articles of War, and performed Divine
Services saw a Steamer coming up from the Sward
in a disabled state, flying Brazilian Colors : 11 Steamer
passed us, made more sail, setting stinsails on both
sides - Much growling and unpleasantness in the Ship.
At 3 lighted fires and steam up - At 6.30 passed
the Heart which hailed us - At 8 came to an anchor in
Rio, finding there the Madagascar and Express - Commdr
went on board to wait on the Admiral, and on his
return told us of Fever being prevalent among the
Shipping, and that the Ocean Monarch (who had left)
