April 14th Wrote on Service to Dr Bynoc, Commdr
went on board Madagascar to answer signal made
for him. In the evening three of us went on shore
to make some purchases for the messes. Had a
game at Billiards and came off about 12.

April 15th At 8.30 the Avon Steamed past us
for England, would to God I had been in her -
Heard that all my clothes left behind at Monte
Video were lost, six dozen in no. Met a gent
who had belonged to the Ocean Monarch, who told me
that instead of 8 cases they had lost 14, and that
there were 118 in the list when they left, besides
much discontent and unpleasantness among the
passengers : the two young ladies who bathed have
not been yet recovered. In the afternoon went on
board the Chrissy Newton a Dundee Ship to see her
1st Officer who was suffering from Fever. At 6
went ashore to Cobras, had a game at Vingt Un
with my old friend Eversfield, and got on board
by nine, had a pipe and turned in.

April 10th In the morning old Higgs was sent
away as Officer of the Guard to board an English
Mechant Vessel outside - Caulkers on work with
our decks and sides and everything most uncomfortable
in the Ship. Received a letter on
Service from Christian relative to our Canadian
Cook. A dinner party in the Madagascar, at
the Admiral's table, at which Deal was one
of the visitors-
