April 17th Received another letter from the
Commdr about the damned Cook made up my
mind to leave the Ship at my ealriest opportunity
heard that the Admiral intends going out in us
next week to see the Indefatigable - Several severe
cases of Fever on board Maddy. Went on board
the Newton where I dined and had tea, and
got on board again by 9 PM and turned in.

April 18th Had another chit with the Commander-
about the Canadian Cook - Now on board from Mad -
employed caulking our decks and sides on the afternoon
a party was formed with some of the Maddys Officers
and some of our chaps to have a cruize in this
[purnace?] up the River to stop for the night
and return next evening, they left about 4.

April 19th In bed all day with Fever & Agues

Sunday April 20th A little better but very
thirsty, after a signal from Flag & having
been at Divisions sent a party ashore to Church.
In the evening, the boatswain of the Christopher
Newton to go there and see, but very feverish myself could
not accompany him - Two hours afterward the Mate came
for me, fearing it was Yellow Fever now very frequent and
in the harbor as soon as he left I went to bed.

April 21st Rose just able to see the sick when I turned in
again, and spent a very restless day, began to think of
Yellow Fever and home.

April 22nd Had a very uncomfortable night, not
being able to sleep on account of headache, but towards
morning dozed off, and woke at 9 feeling better, got up
and had a cold bath and took a Seidlets [Seidlitz?] Powder : but
