at night again was dreadfully restless; in the middle
watch fell an excessive itching, and when I could see
next morning I was completely covered with Prickly
heat, it saved my life-

April 23rd Much better but very weak, another case
of Fever on board and on board the Madagascar 15 cases
in all. The Admiral still at Petropolis. A large Brazy
Steamer went out of harbor. One of the Admiral's Bandsmen
died in the Madagascar in the afternoon. Received an
invitation to a Bal Masqué - Retired at 10.

April 24th Tank came alongside - Brazilian Corvette was
towed up the Harbor, by one of their Steamers, and one
of teh Screws went to sea - Signal for a French Man
of War, and about 5 a fine 10 gun brig anchored.

April 25th At 9 the Brig. saluted the Brazilian Flag and
then ours, which was returned by the Express - All busy
in the Madagascar preparing to receive the Admiral, expate
on board in the afternoon. At 3 the old gentleman went
up the side, in plain clothes. At 7 two guns were fired and two
blue lights burnt at the two Forts, we did not know
the reason - My fever patient better.

April 26th Employed cleaning ship throughout : when
the Commdr returned from the Flag Ship he told me she
had lost a man this morning from Black Vomit:
Christian was told by the Admiral that we were to go to
Sea on Tuesday, to remain there for a fortnight, very glad
to hear it, as we shall be back in time to answer our
letters. At noon I went to Coleras to see Eversfield, and
stopped the remainder of the day with him, assisting to
paper his rooms preparatory to the forthcoming wedding.
Had a game at Cribbage, and afterwards he pulled me on
