Sunday April 27th 1856 In Rio de Janeiro - Fever still on
the increase in the Madagascar, and two cases in Express.
Arrived the Portuguese Steamer with the mail from Lisbon.
My Patient much better, free from danger. 9.30 went to
Divisions and performed Divine Service. At 1 handed
at Cobras and assisted my friend in papering the house
dined with him at 5 and returned to my Ship by 7 PM.

April 28th Tank came alongside, compelted with water:
the Indefatigable in sight from Signal Hill - At 2 PM when
the sea breeze set in, she came round the Fort from the Nward,
and at 6 anchored close to us: a small French man of war Schooner
came in at the same time - In the evening I went on board,
remaining till 9 when I returned and after a pipe turned in.

April 29th Mr Dal went away to survey an English, row Ship:
11.30 commenced to unmoor ship preparatory to going to sea:
damn the Admiral for sending us away just as the mail is
expected, and more so because we are not to be back in
time to send letters home by the Mail. At 20 weighed, got
steam up and went to sea under sealed orders - Sent a
letter a very short one to L, by one of the Indefatigables -
Let the fires burn out and made sail.

April 30th A fine healthy morning with a light land breeze
blowing - running to the Sward with topmast stinsails.
Cleaned Gun room preparatory to painting. In the evening
cards with Commander.

Thursday May 1st 1856 At Sea a light land breeze
exercised at musket drill - Commenced painting gun room.
In the evening had cards int eh Engineer's mess.
